pink explosion

June 5, 2011

Not so long ago, I was lamenting about the sad state of affairs in my dining room.  I had a bold plan to change things up.

We’re not looking at a completed transformation here, but the progress is substantially complete enough (imho) to chronicle.

Anyone remember where we started?

The secretary is now in the bedroom (beneath the round mirror here) and we are contemplating finish colors.

The paintings and prints are awaiting new landing places.

And I’m going to live with things for a while here.  And hope the room gives me some hints about where to go next.  While I cannot name an identifiable decorating style for our home, the overarching themes we keep in mind are serene, uncomplicated and reminiscent of the seashore.

It’s a very large space and I find that my attempts to add interest with small details often seem invisible in the larger context.

One of the reasons I selected pink.  It’s impossible to not notice.  This was the dresser originally.  Nice scale, smooth lines.  I had hoped for a different result with the painted finish, in all honesty.

I wanted a light distressed finish, but wanted a darker brown color beneath the pink.  I goofed.  I used primer, then applied 2 layers of brown, then 2 layers of pink.  When I tried sanding, it was a mess.  Muddy and dirty looking.  Not at all what I had envisioned.  So in the end, I just added a nice layer of paste wax over the pink for a soft, smooth finish.

The hardware is from Anthropologie.  I wanted to echo the silvery tone in the large mirror on the adjacent wall.

The little frames to the left of the suzani hold a collection of costume jewelry – sparkly brooches pinned to white cotton, a look I borrowed from an earlier project.   And instead of using my quilt press to hang the suzani, I sewed 3 yardsticks to the top of the fabric (on the back side) and attached 5 string loops across the top to distribute the weight.

And the accessory in the middle of the dining table is my favorite seaglass arrangement.  The arrangement is actually pretty large, but everything looks small in this gigantic room.

I like the addition of color and the change of furniture and wall accessories.  The scale is so much better now.  It may not be perfect, or complete, but it is definitely an improvement.  Thank you so much for reading and for your earlier suggestions!

Wow. Diane, you have outdone yourself. How uber-fab is that server/sideboard. Love love love that color. In fact, that is probably my very favorite color of all time and the color I painted my office. It is just so uplifting and your kilim rug looks just so great with it. The hardware is perfect. You must be so excited. I know I am for you.

*gasping with delight and applauding wildly*

YES! I do remember you posting about wanting to change things up in this room.

OMG….it turned out BEYOND spectacular! It looks like a completely different room. Much brighter and alive!

Diane, the color of the dresser is stunning! Isn’t it funny how sometimes we have a vision of what something should look, but then turns out completely different and surprisingly better? Love the hardware. Anthropologie is one of my favorite stores to shop in, here in Philly. I adore that store!

I also like all the little ‘accents’ you added to this room.

You’re home is so lovely, my friend.

“the overarching themes we keep in mind are serene, uncomplicated and reminiscent of the seashore.”

Yes. And might I add…very comfortable and inviting.

Hope you had a super weekend, Diane!

    X to you and Cristybella!

I love the pink! It is hard to miss, and that’s a good thing! It ties in really well with the quilt on the table and the suzani wall hanging. The jewelry in the little frames is such a pretty touch, too. I like the keys hanging from the dresser, too. The small touches do sometimes get lost in pictures, but I’m sure the people who get to sit at the table in your pretty dining appreciate them.
    I think you’ve done a great job!

Hi Mimi–thanks for your kind comment! I used Martha Stewart Living (shade Bergamot) from the Home Depot. It is on the coral-orange side of pink and is a good complement to dark browns (the floor color in our room).

Hi Clair, thank you so much. We found that patchwork print tablecloth topper at a lovely store in Rockport (in April) and that became the springboard for the whole movement to pink. You are such a sweetheart for stopping by. I’ve been thinking of you and Wally & send my best – hope he is feeling better and better 🙂

I *really* love the pink!!! You are right about the room being large so such a lovely statement piece really holds it together. I’m glad you didn’t distress the furniture, so many people are doing it these days and honestly? It just makes stuff look old to me. Yours is just perfect 😀
