in search of mid-mod

January 6, 2012

We had too many beds in the house, so Cristybella successfully sold one on craigslist.  The next day we rearranged and found ourselves in need of a couple of chairs.  Two comfy lounging chairs, to be precise.

Last weekend we spent an evening torturing ourselves by looking at gorgeous chairs on the houzz website.  It all started when we decided to check out the classic Barcelona lounge chair (image borrowed from houzz).

I KNOW, right!?  Doesn’t get much more beautiful than that.

They’re so wonderful, but not even close to being affordable (for us).  So we kept looking.  Suffering the ongoing taunting from the price tags accompanying each fabulous piece.

We both love the uncomplicated look and wonderful design of the mid-mod furniture style.

The retro vibe completely grabs my attention.

Craigslist is littered with random furniture.  This little item (below) stood out among the myriad of used chairs.  This is the photo from the original ad — a guy named Ronnie who sells furniture out of this dimly lit, crammed-full-of-stuff-building that’s not really a store.  He just sees customers by appointment only.

It’s not as beautiful as the ThriveFurniture piece….

But for a tiny fraction of the cost…I totally scooped it up.  It’s definitely a vintage piece and has the comfortable low-slung frame that we wanted.  Tackling cushions next, and keeping an eye open for an attractive companion….stay tuned.

What sorts of CL successes have you had lately?

Thanks for dropping in!  Wishing you a fabulous weekend!!

What a great post. I pinned the Barcelona chair and the Room and Board number. Total swoon. I can’t wait to see what you do with your great find. I am really loving the clean sophisticated lines of mid century furniture too and it really can combine well with other pieces. Timeless I would say.

You and I have the same exact taste, Diane!

I LOVE these photos you shared. The thing I like about this style furniture is that it’s clean, simple, yet also has a warmth about it. I also like the angles of the design.

Oh, and I can’t WAIT to see what you do with that chair, because I know I’m gonna LOVE it!

Have a fantabulous weekend, my dear friend!

    X to you and Cristybella!

I’m totally a CL junkie! Can’t say I’ve had much luck lately – everything I call on is already sold. Funny story though – last night I called on a buffet, turned out it was being sold by a family friend! But it too was already sold!🙂 Can’t wait to see what comes of this chair, and what kind of friend you find for it.

My one suggestion is to look at premade cushions for outdoor furniture. We found a similar chair on cl and got perfect sized cushions in a very cool retro patter in the local Walmart lawn and garden section. They also had a bunch at kmart and target, but the walmart ones were the perfect size and on clearance.

    Awwww….it just needs a little love. 🙂

And cushions from the outdoor furniture department maybe?
