candlestick glam
In the 1980s, a decorative-minded friend advised me to use touches of brass and crystal in my home. Consequently, I have a modest collection of brass and bronze candlesticks. Still pretty, but they remind me of the 1980s.
Time for a fresh look. I took the two largest ones and started by drilling 3 holes around the top rim to hook some loose chandelier crystals. Then applied a thin layer of Silver Leaf paint (Martha Stewart’s Precious Metals), but didn’t cover the brass completely. I figure it’s not going to look like real silver anyway, so might as well augment the visual interest of the painted finish by letting the brass peek through, just like highlights.
OK. Step in the right direction. But still a bit flat. So I sponged on a very watery black glaze for depth then sprayed with clear gloss for shine.
much better, I’m OK with this.
Plenty more brass refinishing to go, but I’m planning to try several alternative approaches, just to lend the least amount of uniformity possible to the entire brass collection.
Thank you for reading 🙂 Tomorrow Cristybella and I are headed out to the Round Top antiques market for an adventure filled day in the country. Maybe we’ll see some of you there!

These candlesticks turned out beautiful!
I have always loved shiny brass but over the years, repainted or gave away most of it. However, brass is coming back in..even Pottery Barn is showing some. I had a beautiful golden brass mirror and painted it sliver, just ruining it. I was just sick. Sooo, you may want to hold on to some of your brass collection, without painting all of it. 🙂
…just sayin’

AWESOME transformation, Diane!!
And I absolutely LOVE the crystals you added – BRAVA!
They reminded me of When I was kid, my parents had a crystal chandelier over the dining room table, and when we turned it on all the crystals just shimmered and glistened!
GREAT photos too, Diane!
Have a wonderful time at the antique market tomorrow!
X to you and Cristybella!
Diane, Such a great idea adding the crystals! Now you have me thinking about some brass sconces I have stored away. Have a great time at Round top and thanks for joining the Open House party.
Hugs,
Sherry
love. love. love. I saw some candlesticks on Pinterest the other day that had been spray painted different colors and the result was stunning when they were pulled together in a collection. So many fun things to do with paint. You rocked this one!
LOVE THEM! I really like the fact that the brass still shows through, awesome!
Hugs

Okay…..I have cupboards with brass and crystal. *laughing!!* I’m thinkin’ you can guess how THAT happened!
Ya done GOOD!
Mine?
Ummm…..in the cupboards.
Yeah–I REALLY need to clear out those cupboards…… ‘Specially now that I have some ideas of what I could do with the stuff!
Love what you did with the candle sticks. I am in awe of people who are so creative and really come up with beautiful things. I can spot good stuff, but I can’t make it myself.
Have a great time at Round Top, but stay cool – I am not there this time, but hear it is unbearably hot this year. Hope you find lots of treasure!
You definitely gave the candlesticks a new life…bet they’re happy! Very Cottagie (is that a word?) Anyway…I really like their new look! Very Clever!
I think that looks fabulous! The glaze really sells the finish.
Have a great time at Round Top~I can’t wait to see your pictures. 🙂
Gorgeous!
You did a great job!
My list of things to do keeps growing-
you have inspired me.
